It was way easier to separate the hair this way.
How much you use per dread depends on how big you want them. I used medium size dreads and used 6 packages but I could have definitely used more in my hair. I used this tutorial http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Synthetic-Dreads-Making-Solid-Single-Ended-Dr/ and loved it.
I wouldn't buy a backcombing comb though mine broke after just a few dreads. So I went down to the store and bought one of the simple 97 cent combs and it was perfect. To seal them I used a wet wash cloth over the dread and steamed them with a straightener.
I also did the transitional and candy cane dreads. Those can be found on the link I provided.
Here's a small sample of what I ended up with. When I was done I had 50 dreads in all. I had a friend of mine put them in, it took around 3-4 hours to complete. She braided them in and used the small clear rubber bands from Walmart. Here's the end result.
Styling was my next task. I always wear a headband in the front. I like the half ties that's pictured below the best. Putting it all up in one ponytail causes too much pull on my head.
I bought a net today and it's worked out pretty well so far, it's nice since it's been so hot lately. It lets air flow through very nicely.
This was my first attempt at making and wearing dreads. I love them. I will probably wait until winter to do them again, but I will definitely be trying them again.
